Nugget comes in at 13.1% alpha acids.
This hop is perfect for bittering a lot of dark beers, lagers, and IPAs. This hop is earthy, and slightly floral in aroma.
While l’ve never used it as a flavor hop, it does come off as sweet fruit. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this as flavor addition.
Nugget is a variety that if you’re looking to grow hops would do well outside of its native area, the Pacific Northwest. I’ve used Pennsylvania grown nugget several times and it definitely retains its character out of its natural terroir.
Fun Fact: Nugget was originally bred for bitterness… but it hides a secret aroma punch. While Nugget is typically labeled a bittering hop (with alpha acids around 12–14%), brewers who dig deeper and use it late in the boil or dry hop will find a surprisingly rich aroma profile! Think herbal, resiny, spicy, and even mild stone fruit or pear-like notes.

Some beers are brewed to style. Others are brewed to memory—and sometimes, to heritage. For me, brewing has always gone hand in hand with another passion: cooking. Growing up with Indian cuisine, I was surrounded by layers of aroma—spices blooming in hot oil, the rhythm of a “tadka,” the balance between heat, warmth, and depth.…
