Anchovy | Hop Sensory Analysis With Oil Creek Brewing

Does it taste like anchovies? Not at all!! It’s purely fruity and piney.

Anchovy is a uniquely named variety that is a unique as it sounds. Developed by Segal Ranch in the lower Yakima Valley, Washington. Initially known in trials as “24B‑05,” it was later renamed “Anchovy” by Matt Storm and Brian Strumke of Fast Fashion Brewing in Seattle.

It comes in at 12% Alpha Acids and to be completely honest with you, I haven’t been this excited to use a hop in a long time!

The aromas I get are watermelon/raspberry jolly rancher.

Flavors of citrus and pine are common. Breweries have reported the watermelon jolly rancher aroma transferring over into the finish product as well as flavor.

Last week I brewed a beer with it and l’m so eager to get it out of the tank! I cannot wait to check this hop out. Stay tuned for that in the coming weeks!

As always huge shoutout to Yakimavalleyhops for sponsoring this segment. Check out Anchovy and other not so uniquely named hops at their website.

Masala Midnight: A Stout Inspired by India’s Spice Legacy with Nath Brew Works

Some beers are brewed to style. Others are brewed to memory—and sometimes, to heritage. For me, brewing has always gone hand in hand with another passion: cooking. Growing up with Indian cuisine, I was surrounded by layers of aroma—spices blooming in hot oil, the rhythm of a “tadka,” the balance between heat, warmth, and depth.…

The Black IPA Blueprint: How to Master the Cascadian Style with Spinning Vinyl

The Black IPA is basically the ultimate mind game in a pint glass. It looks exactly like a heavy stout but the second you take a sip your brain has to pivot because it tastes like a fresh bag of hops. It is a tricky style to nail because you are trying to balance two…
